Although figures can vary, a downturn of 15%-20% or more in multiple indexes (Dow or S&P 500) is considered an entry into a bear market. Or, a period during which share prices generally fall. Investment interest is limited. There are often economic issues such as high unemployment or declining corporate profits. The 1929 collapse of the shares on the New York Stock Exchange led to a bear market.
