A market maker must generally be willing to buy at least 100 shares at its quoted bid price and sell at least 100 shares at its quoted asked price. Or, a broker-dealer who has indicated that they will make a market in the shares of a specific company. The indication does not necessarily mean the broker-dealer will make a market in the company's shares. In theory, a market maker is a wholesaler of the company's shares.
