Put Option ContractA put is an option contract that gives the holder the right to sell a certain quantity of shares of a specified security at a specified price within a specific time period. You can either buy the put option, giving you the right to "put" the stock to the buyer, or you can sell the put option, giving someone the right to "put" the stock to you. If you write, or sell, a put without being short the equivalent amount of the underlying stock, that is called an uncovered put. If you write the put while you are short the equivalent amount of the underlying stock, then it is called a covered put.
